At last, DSS releases Nnamdi Kanu for medical examination

The leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, has finally met with his personal doctor for a medical check-up outside the detention facility of the Department of State Services (DSS). This was confirmed by his lead counsel, Ifeanyi Ejiofor, who said he witnessed the consultation in a hospital in Abuja on Friday.

Ejiofor said in a statement that the medical check-up was successful and that Kanu would be moving to the next stage of his treatment soon. He expressed his gratitude to the court for granting Kanu’s request for an independent medical examination of his health condition.

Kanu has been in DSS custody since June 2021, when he was arrested and extradited from Kenya. He is facing various charges of treason and terrorism, which he has denied. He has also been denied access to his family and supporters, who have been protesting for his release and the actualization of Biafra.

Kanu is the founder and leader of IPOB, a separatist group that advocates for the independence of Biafra from Nigeria. Biafra was a breakaway state that existed in south-eastern Nigeria from 1967 to 1970, following a civil war that claimed millions of lives. IPOB has been banned by the Nigerian government as a terrorist organization, but it enjoys popular support among many Igbo people.

The medical examination is a significant development in Kanu’s case. It will allow Kanu to receive the medical care he needs, and it will also help to shed light on his health condition.

The examination is also a victory for Kanu’s lawyers, who have been fighting for his release and for access to medical care.

It is unclear how long Kanu will remain in the hospital for treatment. However, his release for medical examination is a positive step in his case.
