A human rights activist and author, Comrade Paul Ikechukwu Njoku, has accused the Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, of supervising a gruesome massacre of the Igbo residents in Oyibo, Rivers State.
Governor Wike in penultimate week proscribed the activities of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) in Rivers State. The governor accused them of killing some soldiers and police men during and aftermath of the #EndSars protest.
Mr. Wike imposed a 24 hours curfew in Oyibo area of the State and charged the security forces to arrest and prosecute IPOB members who are allegedly causing destructions, arsons and killings of security forces in the State, adding that the Nnamdi Kanu-led outlawed organization burnt down some police stations in Rivers State.
The governor reiterated that the IPOB’s operational base is located in Oyibo.
Eye witnesses recalled how the Nigerian Army in armouries were arresting and shooting at young Igbo people in Oyibo as well going from house-to-house shooting people upon the 24hour curfew as corpses were littered in the street.
Amnesty International was on Monday, November 2, 2020, called for a stoppage of the mass killings in Oyibo territory.
“IPOB has used Oyibo as a munching ground. The security agencies are aware of this. IPOB didn’t just start munching Oyibo, they start changing the names of communities and people expect me as a sitting Governor to be silent about it. IPOB members must leave Oyibo and not Igbos. Some of them have been sending me text messages from the US that they will do this and that. I repeat, I am not Senator Ekweremadu and Amaechi. I am not that kind of Governor you can intimidate”, said the governor.
In further reaction, activist Paul Njoku, described the killings as senseless, unwarranted and unbrotherly.
“Governor Wike is causing unbearable repulsion and horror in his sad path of ruthless attack and brutality on Oyibo residence in Rivers State.
“It is a pity that Wike embarked on these senseless and unwarranted killings. I never believed it till my friend confided in me with videos and pictures that it was terrifically horrible to the extent he had to relocat his parents from the territory.
“I am against any IPOB or group of people indulging in arson and killings but the militarization and killings of the Igbo in Oyigbo is unreasonable and unwarranted.
“Why did the governor not carefully identify those he needed to identify as IPOB than the bloodbath against every body in the area?
“In Northern Nigeria, Boko Haram members that have killed thousands of Nigerian soldiers are given amnesty and called “misguided brothers” while the Fulani murderous militia masquerading as herdsmen maiming, raping and killing people across the State are boldly walking free. Even General Muhammadu Buhari few years ago, proclaimed that any attack on them is attack on the North.
“It is very sad to note that in Southern Nigeria and Rivers State to be precise, Governor Wike is supervising a gruesome massacre of the Igbo under the guise of fighting IPOB.
“Many people who do not have affiliation with the IPOB have been wounded, incarcerated, detained, arrested, beaten to scorn and killed by the security forces. Families are displaced and businesses destroyed. This is ethnic cleansing.
“Governor Wike ought to know that power is transient and that Karma still exists”, Njoku, said.
