In what appeared like a serious blow on the prospects of Governor Udom Emmanuel wining a second term, and in continuation of what has been a very bad week for the Government and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the State, a new Commissioner of Police has been posted to the State, ostensibly at the instance of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The immediate past Commissioner of Police, Adeyemi Ogunjemilusi, many within the APC had believed was not fully on the same page with them, has been promoted to the rank of an Assistant Inspector General (AIG) and posted out of Akwa Ibom State to pave way for a new commissioner.
The new Commissioner of Police, who our sources say was brought to the State by the APC to work for their interest during the forth coming elections is John Abang. He is said to be a complete establishment man, and is expected to follow the script from Abuja.
“It is a known fact that the APC in the State has been boasting about their readiness to deploy federal might and kick Udom Emmanuel out of office; it appears they have started carrying out their threat with the arrival of a new CP said to be sympathetic to their cause,” a PDP chieftain lamented.
It will be recalled that a crack team of Special Squad from the Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Idris had arrived the State three days ago to investigate allegations of assassination attempts on the life of the APC gubernatorial candidate in the State, Nsima Ekere and the alleged destruction of a billboard of President Muhammadu Buhari.
The State Commissioner for Environment, Dr. Iniobong Essien was invited to the Police Headquarters in Ikot Akpanabia where he was detained and later flown to Abuja for further interrogation.
“All these are pointers to the new order and what to expect in days to come,” the PDP chieftain said.
The arrival in the State of a new CP is indeed a big blow to the PDP.
Speaking anonymously, a stalwart of APC who preferred anonymity boasted; “We have always told the world that we are in control of the Federal Government and we will fully and properly utilize these instruments that are at our disposal. We will use federal might, to dislodge Udom Emmanuel just as it was used in Ekiti and Osun States.
“We are glad we now have a Police Commissioner we can trust and who was brought in by us to work for us.”
A top official of the PDP when asked to comment on the unfolding scenario waxed spiritual “all powers belong to God; only God qualifies a person for leadership.”
