Outrage In Ekiti As Police Beat, Detain Nursing Mother Over Dollars


There was an outrage on new Iyin Road, Ado-Ekiti as five Policemen allegedly descended on a mother of two months old baby ,Mrs Toyin Adeyeye and her driver over her refusal to give them bribe. The matter was said to have heightened when the police at the New-Iyin road checkpoint got wind of the fact that Mrs Toyin Adeyeye was having wads of Dollars with her.

The policemen upon this knowledge demanded that she “settle” them and not in Naira but Dollar.

Mrs Adeyeye upon her refusal to grant the wishes of the police,was allegedly beaten up and later detained at the Police headquarters along Iyin road in Ado-Ekiti.


Mrs Adeyeye who slept in the police detention with her two months old baby was sighted at the police detention in Ado Ekiti but could not narrate her ordeal.


Her husband, Akanni Adeyeye however  in an interview with newsmen decried the alleged brutality meted out on his wife with lacerations on her body and bruises on her face.


Police Commissioner in the state, Abdullahi Chafe in a telephone interview  alleged that the detained nursing mother slapped a policeman on duty and tore his uniform. When he was further asked what could have prompted the woman to slap a police man in uniform,  Police Commissioner Chafe simply said that “the matter is still under investigation”.


Meanwhile, the state chapter of the Federation of International women Lawyers (FIDA), has launched an investigation into the matter as the state chairperson of the body, Funke Anoma has also visited the station in connection with the matter.
